One of the primary components of a smart home is its security system, and there are a lot of other things that can revolve around it.
There’s no question that the crime rate in Texas is on the rise. At the close of 2018, provided the crime activity is steady, the Texas crime rate will see an increase over the last year of 17.3% according to FBI statistics. What makes this more interesting is that larceny and burglary make up 79% of all the crimes committed in Texas.
At Smarter Homes of Austin, we believe that it is imperative that every smart home install includes our standard security system. We pre-wire new builds with it, and it’s integrated into the home. We’re doing our part in helping lower the crime rate by installing high quality security systems with HD audio/visual components including cameras, intercoms, and alarms. To really make this interesting you can control the security from anywhere by using your smartphone, tablet, or computer.
There is more to the installation of the security system than than you think.
It isn’t just installing a smart doorbell or attaching a few cameras and motion sensors. We have to consider the positioning of these devices before we install them and ensure that they have the best advantage points of your home. There are a variety of other considerations that we have to make such as the appropriate devices for internal and external use and coverage area. External cameras work best if their coverage area spans the perimeter around your property their views overlap or be adjacent. Motion sensors are only effective if their trigger path is plotted correctly. The external intercom and microphones need to provide clear communication. The most important thing that we will do as your installer is test everything, set it, and retest it again to ensure you that your home is adequately covered.
Here are some rules of thumb that we follow when installing your security.
– Camera views should overlap or be adjacent.
– Cameras should be out of normal reach and give you clear views of each side of your home.
– The smart doorbell should be installed at a correct height, providing a clear video feed and good audio.
– Ensure that the system is accessed by a computer or smart phone/tablet.
Here are some safety measures that we’d like to suggest.
– When speaking to an unknown person at the door,
* never indicate whether you are in the home or elsewhere.
* never identify who you are.
* Always warn that he/she/they are being recorded with video and sound.
* Always warn that you have activated your silent alarm and the authorities are on their way.
* Never step outside of your home to confront them yourself. Let the police handle it.
You can still be a good neighbor without answering the door in person.
Through the intercom, you can still give directions to someone who is lost. If a stranger at your door insists on using your phone because there is an emergency, let them know that you will call for them, and ask for the location of the emergency. If you have contact with your neighbors and give them the details of what happened at your door. Don’t forget to describe the person. 34% of all home robberies and burglaries happen at the front entryway of the home.
